Government Decides to Clear Goods Stranded at Ports

Commerce Ministry has been directed to submit a summary to the federal cabinet for consideration.

The government has decided in principle to allow clearance of goods stranded at ports.

According to media reports, the issue was discussed in detail at a high-level meeting chaired by Finance Minister Muftah Ismail at the Finance Ministry. Commerce Minister Naveed Qamar also attended the meeting.

According to sources, the Commerce Ministry has been directed to submit a summary to the federal cabinet for consideration. On May 19, the government banned the import of 800 items of 33 types for two months.

According to the notification, the importers have booked the imported goods which have just reached the ports of Karachi. Sources said the documents were filed long before the verdict was announced.

The sources added that the federal cabinet would also review its decision on July 18 on whether to extend the ban on these items. Consideration is also being given to lifting the ban on imports of accessories.

“We have banned the accessories because there was enough stock for two months for local mobile phone manufacturers,” a customs source told media.

On the other hand, the Ministry of Commerce has already lifted the ban on imports of raw materials, intermediate goods and machinery for the industrial sector immediately after the notification.

Sources said that the import of contraband has reached the ports which will be enough for the next few months. The ban was imposed in part to reduce imports.

Sources said that according to the data, the ban on import of these products in the last 38 days has not affected the overall import bill, while the decision on whether to extend the ban or not will be taken on the basis of the overall effect.

Meanwhile, Pakistan Customs has already appointed focal persons at all international airports of the country for the convenience of passengers and timely redressal of their grievances.

Focal persons, who are senior officers of the Customs Department, will be available round the clock to assist passengers.
