According to the Dawn newspaper, the Pakistan Telecommunications Authority (PTA) in its annual report for 2021, highlighting many other achievements, said that the number of broadband subscribers across the country has also exceeded 100 million.

According to the report, the telecom industry paid Rs 1.79 trillion in general sales tax, holding tax, customs duty, and other taxes in the year 2020-2020 as against Rs 1.78 trillion in the previous year.

The PTA report shows that the country’s successful policy against the Corona epidemic and measures taken to facilitate the industry and protect consumers have contributed to the development of global connectivity and the sector.

According to the report, for the first time, the number of smartphones has increased from 2G phones, compared to the 48% market share of 2G phone sets.

During the financial year 2017-18, the market share of 2G phone sets across the country was 60%.

Minister for IT and Telecom Syed Aminul Haq, while expressing confidence in the steps taken by the government under the ‘Digital Pakistan’ policy, said that the policies formulated in the year 2020 have started showing results.

He said that specific discount policies and the introduction of mobile manufacturing in the country have led the country towards a better situation in the telecom sector.

During the year 2020, the import of mobile phones in the country decreased from 24.5 million to 10 million as the number of mobile phones manufactured in the country reached 24.6 million.

However, most of the locally manufactured mobiles were 2G phones which numbered 14.6 million while there were 10 million smartphones.

The report shows that 30 companies, including Samsung, the world’s largest mobile phone company, have been licensed to produce mobile sets.

The report also revealed that in the year 2021, the number of broadband subscribers across the country reached 102.7 million.

In addition, 89% of the country’s population has access to telecom and ICT services, while up to 49% of Pakistanis have a mobile broadband connection.

In addition, with the expansion of 3G and 4G services, broadband data usage increased by 52% to 6,855 petabytes during 2020-2020 (one petabyte equals one thousand terabytes).

Due to the increase in the use of Internet services, the revenue of the telecom sector reached a record high of $ 644 billion during the financial year.

There has also been a massive increase in digital financial inclusion, with the number of active mobile vault accounts increasing by 72% from 46.7 million a year ago to 46 million.

As a result, the number of active mobile wallet agents, known as branchless banking, reached 356,280, an increase of 35% over the previous year.

Jazz remained the market leader with 69.7 million mobile phone users and 38.4 million Internet subscribers, followed by Telenor with 49.2 million subscribers, Zong with 44.4 million subscribers, and 20 million. Ufone ranks fourth with 3.1 million subscribers.

PTA said that in the current year 21-2021, its focus will be on improving service quality and coverage, including the launch of additional spectrum, the launch of 5G service, and nationwide fiber optics network.
