Chinse Envoy call on COAS

Chinese Ambassador Nong Rong met with Chief of Army Staff General Qamar Javed Bajwa in which they discussed issues related to the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), security in the region, bilateral cooperation, and promotion of issues of common interest.

The meeting was held at the General Headquarters before Prime Minister Imran Khan’s visit to China from February 3 to 5, quoting a statement from the Pakistan Army Public Relations (ISPR).

During his three-day visit, Prime Minister Imran Khan will attend the opening ceremony of the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing and hold talks with senior Chinese leaders on bilateral relations.

Last year’s attacks have raised clear Chinese concerns, including an attack near the Dasu hydropower plant in July and an attack on a hotel in Quetta in April, during a visit to the hotel’s provincial capital.

Islamabad, meanwhile, had agreed to pay compensation to Chinese employees killed and injured in the Dasu attack and had made various payments.

During the meeting with the Chinese Ambassador, General Qamar Javed Bajwa reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to Chinese projects and the full security of Chinese nationals working in the country.

The ISPR said that the Chinese Ambassador thanked General Qamar Javed Bajwa for taking special measures to provide a safe environment in the ongoing CPEC projects in Pakistan.

It is likely that the PCEC project, which has been slowing down for many years, will be part of the Prime Minister’s meetings in China.

One of the reasons for the slowdown in CPEC is the global outbreak of the coronavirus, after which no major Chinese promises have been made. Financial funds for the renovation of the Peshawar Railway Line (ML-1) have also been delayed.

The statement said that Nong Rong “expressed satisfaction with the development of CPEC and reiterated the need to complete the ongoing projects on time”.

During the meeting, security in the region was discussed, especially in the Afghanistan category.

General Qamar Javed Bajwa told the Ambassador that Pakistan has always been committed to cooperating with international partners for peace in the region.

Meanwhile, Ambassador of the Czech Republic Car Thomas Smitnka met with Chief of Air Staff Air Marshal Zaheer Ahmed Babar Sadhu at Pakistan Air Force Headquarters.

The PAF says Tomas Smitanka praised the Pakistan Air Force personnel for their professionalism and achievements over the years.

Staff Air Marshal Zaheer Ahmad Babar Sadhu reiterated his commitment to further enhance the existing cooperation between PAF and Czech Air Force.

A statement from PAF said that various issues of mutual interest and professional cooperation were also discussed during the meeting.
