Fake SIMs became a headache for NADRA, PTA, and FIA. PTA has decided to introduce live fingerprint detection devices instead of biometrics for the issuance of SIMs, for which PTA has expedited the transfer of the SIM biometric systems to LFD.
According to Pakistan Telecommunication, 300,000 SIM biometric centers across the country will be shifted to LFD, on which PTA has directed telecom operators to transfer to LFD devices in phases. In the first phase, mobile operators have started verifying SIM LFD devices in most places.
According to PTA, 732,000 fake SIMs have been identified so far and 580,000 such SIMs have been identified which have resulted in deaths.
According to PTA, mobile operators and franchisees are involved in issuing fake SIMs. Defects have also been identified in the LFD devices of telecom operators.
According to sources, the LFD has received numerous complaints that failed in live fingerprinting.
There is a huge cost involved in purchasing machines for the biometric system. It will be difficult to purchase new machines for the new system on a daily basis.
