The Parliament of Pakistan was informed that in the last three years more than 28,700 citizens have applied to NADRA to change their data and change their gender in the record.
The Senate was told in a written reply during Question Hour on Wednesday that 16,530 men had applied for gender reassignment registration as women.
In his written reply to the question of Senator Mushtaq Ahmed, Federal Minister for Home Affairs Sheikh Rasheed Ahmed told the Senate that between July 2018 and June this year, 12,154 women have applied for registration of their gender as men.
In addition, according to the report, in the last three years, 9 citizens have applied to change their gender from male to eunuch, while 21 people have requested to register their gender from eunuch as male.
According to NADRA, nine citizens have also applied for registration of their gender as eunuchs as women.
Senator Mushtaq had asked how many citizens had applied for a gender reassignment certificate from NADRA in the last three years?
NADRA in its reply said that NADRA does not issue gender reassignment certificates however gender is changed in the record due to medical reasons and eunuchs are registered as male or female.
NADRA has handled 28,723 such cases in these three years.
