The Federal Ministry of Human Rights has opened the country’s first transgender protection center in the capital Islamabad for the protection and rehabilitation of eunuchs.

According to Dawn newspaper, the protection center set up in Sector H9 / 4 of Islamabad was inaugurated on October 13 by Federal Minister for Human Rights Dr. Shirin Mazari.

On the occasion of the inauguration of the Transplant Protection and Rehabilitation Center, Dr. Shirin Mazari said that similar centers would be set up in other cities in which all kinds of assistance would be provided to the members of the eunuch community.

Mazari said the transgender protection center would provide legal, medical, technical, and other assistance to transgender people and make them independent in every way possible through assistance.

According to the federal minister, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government paid special attention to the restoration of the rights of the eunuch community and included them in the Ehsas program, and also issued health cards to them.

The center will also provide legal assistance and protection to transgender people.

It was informed at the function that the rehabilitation center was opened under Section 6A of the Transgender Protection Act 2018 and other similar centers would be opened in other cities of the country.

According to the state-run news agency Associated Press of Pakistan (APP), the opening ceremony of the center was addressed by senior officials of the Ministry of Human Rights, human rights leaders, and activists of the eunuch community.

Award-winning eunuch rights activist, politician, and social leader Nayab Ali also attended the ceremony.

The inauguration ceremony was also attended by several eunuchs, who also thanked the government for setting up the protection center.

The rehabilitation center is the country’s first transgender protection and rehabilitation center. Earlier in May this year, members of the eunuch community in Islamabad also opened the country’s first madrassa for the religious education of transgender people.

In addition, educational institutions have been set up in Multan and other cities of the country for the last few years for the education and technical training of eunuchs.

Earlier, the country’s first eunuch tailor shop in Karachi was also opened this year.

In the last few years, transgender people across Pakistan have been given jobs in government and private institutions, while transgender people have started doing professional work with their help.

It should also be noted that transgender people were first recognized as a third sex in Pakistan in 2009 when the Supreme Court ordered transgender people to be issued a third gender identity card along with a birth certificate. After which they were provided with different gender identity cards.

There is no official record of the final number of transgender people in Pakistan, but according to the 2017 census and various reports, the number of transgender people in the country is up to one million, but some people claim that their number is much higher.

Transgender people mostly make a living by dancing at other events, including weddings, while some also do begging.
